Chapter Nine

Finn wiped the sweat from his forehead and bent over, resting his hands on his knees. Lifting his head, he looked at the woods surrounding him before glancing at his watch. He shook his head when he saw that it was a quarter after seven. He knew it’d grow dark soon and he had to find his way out of the woods before then.

Looking up, he was surprised to see a lookout stand a little way off in the distance. His breath left his lungs in a sigh of relief and he jogged over to the ladder attached to the tree trunk. Climbing the ladder, he made his way to the top and pushed open the hatch on the bottom of the stand. Crawling inside, he stood on the carpeted floor and caught his breath before turning to look out over the forest below. His eyes scanned the tops of the trees and he pumped his fist in the air when he saw what he hoped was the road about twenty yards to the right. Putting his hands on his hips, he dropped his head and waited for his heart to slow. He berated himself for losing his cool when he realized he was lost in the woods.

Lifting his head, he looked out over the trees again and smiled when he saw his house off in the distance. Turning, he bent to lift the hatch door and stiffened when a scream tore through the woods. His head jerked up and he held his breath, waiting for the scream to come again, silently praying that it wouldn’t. When the woods remained quiet, he opened the hatch and slowly descended the ladder.

When his feet touched the ground, he stepped back and wiped his sweaty palms on the legs of his jeans as he looked up at darkening sky overhead. He didn’t remember anything on the news about rain, but he could hear thunder rumbling in the distance. Turning in the direction he had seen the road, he began jogging through the woods, hoping he made it home before the sky opened up.

A scream ripped through the woods again and he stumbled to a stop, his heart jackhammering beneath his ribs. When the scream came again, sounding closer than before, his stomach clenched and he almost tripped when he began running; slapping tree branches out of his way and casting frightened looks over his shoulder. His foot caught on a fallen branch and his body flew forward. Finn opened his mouth and let out a startled scream seconds before his head slammed against a rock and he slipped into darkness.
